~Corrosion Dawn~
Mercedes St. Augustine had wondered when she was younger why there were almost no mirrors in the colony.

She hadn't looked into a mirror until just a few weeks ago. There were so many mirrors in the Council Hall. Walking down the huge, echoing halls in her barfeet, last in line in a line of people following one two Low Council guards, she looked into the mirrors and was shocked. She had never seen her own face in one, only seen it in the reflection on the water or in a window. But this relfection was so crystal clear.

Mercedes now was sitting in the window of her apartment on the tenth floor, thinking about that day. The window was open and a light breeze blew it, ruffling the curtains and her hair as it did. That day had been so surreal.

They were going to see the High Council. Mercedes had never seen most of these people before, and had never spoken to them. Most of them she had only seen from afar, across the Training Grounds as they, like her, threw summoning stones into the air and screamed the seals. She wondered why she had been summoned, along with all these people. She had a small hint. Did it have something to do with the epidemic? She'd heard men on the streets as she walked past talking about it. Rumors about how Sector F, the medical district, was going to be quarantined.

Where would people get their medical treatment if it was quarantined?, thought Mercedes. All of the clinics and the hospital were in Sector F.

The Grand Hall, the meeting place of the High Council, was at the end of a large, gloomy looking corridor. The room itself was blocked off with huge, solid wood doors. No handles. Mercedes swallowed, uncharacteristically anxious. Had she done something wrong? No, that wasn't it, because all the others were their.

The guards that led them stopped at the door. A hush fell over the small crowd of maybe 20, replacing the quiet hum of anxious whispers. They waited for a moment and the wooden doors creaked open eerily. The guards motioned for the group to walk in , and two by two in a straight line, they marched in. Mercedes and a man of about 25 named Ferrin were last in line. Ferrin looked ahead stonily, but Mercedes looked over her shoulder as the doors closed behind them.

The group stopped and spread out in front of a row of big, dark wood podiums. The one in the middle was tallest. On either side were gradually smaller podiums. They were all up on a high pedestal. There was a large table, and just enough chairs for the 20 of them. They milled around for a moment, and slowly sat down in the chairs, one by one. Mercedes was on of the first to sit, but sat on the end furthest from the podiums.

No sooner had they all sat in silence did two doors on either side of the podium pedestal swing open without a sound. The five High Council members walked in, their robes swirling around them. Waves of shades of purple, red and gold. The two women members let their long hair swing freely and it seemed to flow with their more feminine robes. The rest of the members were men that were wearing similar, but more masculine robes. One of the woman members, the youngest of the two (she looked about 30) made eye contact with Mercedes briefly. She was beautiful, with long golden hair and deep blue eyes. Those eyes pierced Mercedes' mind for the two seconds they met, and Mercedes swallowed again.

The High Council sat. The man in the middle was huge and towered above all of the others. With stern eyes he observed the 20 men and women at the table and then said "Ladies and gentlemen... Morrowflail is in a state of emergency. For this reason, we have called you, the best and strongest we have outside of the Councils, here. All of you sitting at that table are hereby conisdered honorary members of the Low Council until the emergency is over."

The woman looked at Mercedes again. There was no smile, but the look in her eyes assured Mercedes that she would have if she could.

The man continued. "You all will be accompianing a caravan of citizens to the Tessa colony, as a vanguard. You leave the day after tomorrow, at dawn. Announcements of the evacuation will be given tonight. You have until then to choose items to bring with you, only as much as can be carried in a small bag. We will be taking the automobiles stored in the Sector E warehouses."

Mercedes had to work hard to take it all in.

Now, as she sat in her window, the night after that day. she thought. She rested her round chin on slender, slightly bony knees. She was wearing her white pajama bottoms, her favorite ones. Her things were packed and sat next to the door.

They left at dawn.

I hope I can clean the slate with you all before I leave. Um... I guess that's it. Have a happy and safe summer and God loves you!
