FFVII was a huge jump from VI, the materia system was easy to use, even for begginers. It manged to balace tactical combat with an involving storyline and it had cutting edge graphics for the time.
FFVIII. The story just blew any book or film out of the water. The imagery of the world, the design of the characters and achetecture was huge compared to VII. A bigger game in all respects. Although this was let down by the dodgy draw system, it remains my favourite.
FFIX was squaresoft's marmite. You either loved it or hated it. I loved it. A "sweet sixteen" love story with a maverick hero was refreshing. The world populated by humanoid animals was something new and gave a bit of character to every person you met. It combined comic characters like Steiner (I almost choked laughing at the chase across Alexandria castle at the start) with serious, withdrawn characters like Freya and Amarant. It all worked well. |
